  • Keeping Your Business Connected When a Carrier Has an Outage
Office staff affected by a carrier outage while a technology adviser monitors separate primary and backup connections

When a major carrier has an outage, business owners naturally start asking questions about cloud phones, connectivity and how their teams would keep working.

We think there is a more useful question to ask.

Rather than questioning cloud services as a whole, it is more useful to review whether one network, circuit or supplier path carries too much of the business.

In July, Australian businesses were again reminded how quickly a mobile disruption can affect calls and data. The useful lesson is that modern communications work best when the backup service has been planned with genuine independence in mind.

A well-designed fallback needs genuine independence

A business might have NBN as the primary connection and a mobile service as backup. That sounds sensible. If both services rely on the same carrier or the same upstream dependency, the backup may disappear with the primary service.

The same issue appears with phones. Diverting calls to mobiles helps only if those mobiles remain available. A cloud phone platform gives us more options, but the continuity design still needs separate paths.

Next Steps

Most businesses do not need an elaborate recovery programme for every minor interruption. They do benefit from a clear view of which services matter and whether the fallback is genuinely independent.

When we review continuity, we look at the whole chain: primary internet, secondary connectivity, carrier diversity, power, phone routing, cloud dependencies and the people who need to keep working. The answer differs between a medical practice, a warehouse, a professional office and a mobile workforce.

The objective is practical continuity, so one supplier issue does not interrupt the whole business.

If you would like greater confidence in your connectivity, bring us into the conversation. We will review the dependencies, confirm what is working well and identify any practical improvements.
