When organisations evaluate CCTV, most attention goes to image quality, coverage and storage. They ask how many cameras are needed, whether faces and vehicles can be identified, how long footage can be retained and whether sites can be viewed remotely. All are important questions.

There is another question worth asking: who can access the cameras themselves? Modern surveillance systems are connected technology platforms. They may be internet-connected, remotely accessible and integrated with business networks or access-control systems. A camera can protect a site while still creating risk if the platform, configuration or maintenance approach is poor.


A current reminder that cameras need cyber discipline

Researchers reported in August 2026 that a campaign had compromised more than 14,530 Dahua devices using credential attacks, two authentication-bypass vulnerabilities and a peer-to-peer relay technique. The reported activity demonstrates that surveillance devices can attract the same attention as other network-connected technology.

The practical lesson is broader than one manufacturer. A camera system cannot be treated as a set-and-forget appliance. Firmware, remote access, user accounts, network design and vendor support all matter throughout the life of the system.

For business owners and public-sector leaders, this does not mean every camera is unsafe. It means procurement and maintenance decisions should consider the security of the platform as well as the quality of the image.


Who is watching matters as much as what is being watched

CCTV footage can reveal entrances, staff movements, customer activity, operating hours and the physical layout of a site. In healthcare, education, government and critical environments, that can be sensitive operational information.

Remote viewing is convenient, but it should be designed around clear access requirements. User accounts should be limited to people who need them. Unused accounts should be removed. Passwords should be strong and unique. Internet exposure and peer-to-peer access should be considered carefully rather than left enabled by default.

Platform selection is a business decision

Not every CCTV deployment has the same requirements. A small commercial site may prioritise reliable coverage, useful evidence and straightforward remote access. A government, education, healthcare or regulated environment may also have procurement, compliance and supply-chain requirements.

Secure CCTV is more than the camera

A commercial CCTV system includes cameras, recorders, storage, network connections, mobile access, user accounts, cabling and power. Weakness in any one of those areas can affect reliability or security.

We consider whether the CCTV network should be segmented from other business systems, how administrators will connect, whether cloud or P2P functions are genuinely needed and how firmware will be managed. We also plan capacity, retention and backup requirements so footage is available when the business needs it.

For multi-site clients, consistency becomes especially important. A clear design standard, documented access model and maintenance programme make it easier to support the system across locations without creating a different set of assumptions at every site.


Footage matters when something has already happened

Most organisations do not watch every camera every day. The value of the system becomes obvious when there is an incident, workplace issue, property damage or request for evidence. At that point, management expects the right camera to have been operating, the recording to be available and the footage to be usable.

That expectation depends on camera positioning, image quality, storage health, time settings, network connectivity and ongoing maintenance. A system that has not been reviewed since installation may contain failed drives, outdated firmware, poor night coverage or user accounts that no longer reflect the organisation.

Compliance needs context, not a label

Compliance is rarely achieved by choosing one product badge. Government and regulated projects may have requirements relating to procurement, data handling, cyber security, licensing, site conditions and record management. The appropriate solution depends on the organisation and the project.

Our role is to understand those requirements, recommend suitable products and document the solution. Where an NDAA-compliant camera range is needed, we can include that in the design. Where other requirements apply, we address those as part of the wider specification.

A secure system needs an owner after handover

Security technology changes over time. Vendors release firmware, mobile applications evolve, staff change and the risk profile of a site develops. The system therefore needs a clear owner and a sensible maintenance approach after installation.

We recommend that organisations know who approves access, who receives alerts, how updates are assessed and when the system will be reviewed. Management should not need to become a CCTV technician. The responsibility is to set the business, operational and compliance requirements, then rely on a capable partner to manage the technology.

A maintenance agreement can include periodic health checks, firmware review, storage checks, camera performance and support when footage is required. The exact arrangement should reflect the size and importance of the system.


The secure choice should also be a positive experience
