NBN voice

The National Broadband Network (NBN)

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is a government initiative to ensure all Australians can choose high-speed broadband by 2021. The NBN is a wholesale-only network, which means NBN Co. does not sell directly to consumers.

Originally the NBN was to be an Optic Fibre cable to your premises product, now it may be either Optic Fibre or Optic Fibre to a Node and copper wire to your premises plus a number of other options.

The NBN broadband is not an ADSL service and existing ADSL modems are not compatible, new device will be required to run broadband or voice on the NBN regardless of your preferred supplier.

To activate the NBN service a Network Termination Device (NTD) is required, it is a small wall mounted box. It is not transportable so placing of this NTD is crucial when first installed in your premises.

How fast is the NBN Broadband?

The NBN basic speeds available is up to 12Mb down and up to 1MB upload and can be increased up to a maximum of up to 100Mb download and up to 40Mb upload, as a comparison, ADSL2+ maximum speed is 24Mb down and 1Mb up, providing you are very close to the exchange.

The NBN Internet service can be suitable for the use of SIP or VOIP telephone lines, most of existing phone systems can be used with new SIP lines. AST Technologies can help with an easy transition, contact us to discuss how we can help your business.

So, is the NBN a good thing?

As a general rule, yes it is, in most cases it will improve your existing ADSL service. From a telephone system point of view our advice to our customers is to convert their existing phone services to SIP lines. By upgrading to SIP lines your business will start saving money on phone calls and line rentals.

From a Data point of view, the NBN will open new avenues on how you do business, will also compliment your business if you have multiple branches etc.

AST Technologies will help your transition to NBN , just give us a call on Ph. 1300 338 266 or an email.
