Happy World Backup Day! 🎉 Today is the day we celebrate the unsung hero of our digital lives: the backup. It’s like the best friend you call at 2 AM during a crisis – always there to save the day.

So, what’s this day all about? It’s a reminder that in the digital age, our data is as precious as gold, and backing it up is like having a treasure map when you need it most. It’s the day we ensure our memories, work, and cat videos are safe from digital doom.

How do you keep your business data secure?  Here’s a quick checklist…

    1. Backup your cloud data.  “But hang on, isn’t the data already safe if its in the cloud?”  Well, that is until a rogue employee deletes something or overwrites a file.  Or a hacker gains access and holds the data ransom.  It’s important to backup your cloud data in a separate location just in case.  Most of our clients use the Microsoft365 cloud platform, and we set up automatic backups of this data including files in onedrive & sharepoint, teams messages & emails to another cloud service automatically & silently in the background.
    2. Backup your on prem server with a BCDR device: BCDR (business continuity and disaster recovery) devices are more than just backup devices.  They take a complete image of your server, saving it locally and also in the cloud.  In the case of your server failing, these images can be run as your server until it’s replaced.  They also keep historical backups so industries such as financial, medical & government can comply with regulations on data retention.
    3.  Protect your critical infrastucture with power protection & backup:  Don’t just backup your data, backup your power!  Computers hate power fluctuations & sudden outages, often deciding to call it quits for good during these incidents.  A relatively low cost UPS (unninteruptable power supply) can protect your critical infrastucture and dramatically increase it’s life.

The cost of a technology outage can cripple a business. Use this Recovery Time & Downtime Cost Calculator to focus on a handful of simple metrics that might come into play during a downtime event, and start a general analysis of what an outage could mean to your business.

Remember, a backup a day keeps the data loss at bay! So, let’s raise our glasses (or flash drives) to backups, and may our data live to see another click. 🥂💾.
